Infrared Saunas FAQ
Our saunas provide both health and beauty benefits to you though lower temperature, sun-simulating technology.
SaunaMed Infrared Saunas have been designed and developed to bring the whole sauna experience to every home regardless of space and budget. No matter what your situation is; we have something for you.
Infrared energy is the heat you feel on a sunny day from the sun. You can feel the difference between having the rays hit your body and when they stop, like when the sun is blocked by a cloud.
Far Infrared radiant heat is a completely safe form of naturally occurring energy that heats objects.
The primary source of radiant energy is the sun; but as we all know, too much of this energy is not good and can damage the skin. This is where the benefits of FIR come in. FIR heat can provide all of the benefits of sunlight, without the dangerous effects it has on us.
Yes, without question infrared saunas are safe. Infrared light energy does no damage to the body and is truly beneficial for it.
As an example, infrared heating is used in the following scientific and medical settings:
To warm newborns in the hospital
To promote the healing of sprains
To promote the healing of strained muscles
To maintain the cardiovascular fitness level of NASA astronauts during spaceflights
Please note that in most loactions within the United States children under the age of 16 are not permitted to enter saunas. This is because they are deemed unable to regulate their body temperature as effectively as adults. Any person under the age of 16 enters a sauna at their own risk.
Our saunas are made from the Finest Grade Non-allergenic / Non-toxic Canadian Hemlock, or hand selected finest grade A Canadian Red Cedar. They are built with solid tongue-and-groove construction, are compact and best of all they are easy to assemble. All our infrared saunas are classed as Far Infrared saunas, which is the most beneficial infrared treatment for your health.
When you are ready to use them they plug into a standard household plug and only take a few minutes to heat. Each sauna is slightly raised off on 4 legs, so you don’t have to worry about it damaging your flooring.
Also do not forget our proven, strict, quality management and wide range of accessories.
Carbon heaters only project Far Infrared rays in a straight line, just like how they travel in nature. If you want to get the full benefit of these rays, you would have to cover the inside of your whole sauna with these carbon heaters.
DuraWave™ pure ceramic far infrared heaters take a different approach; actually they use a whole different shape. A DuraWave heater is coiled into a concave shape and uses surgical-grade, stainless steel, wide-projection deflectors to maximize and concentrate the infrared output towards your body.
This means that no matter where you are sitting in a SaunaMed Sauna, your whole body being exposed to the beneficial Far Infrared rays.
What are DuraWave™ Infrared Heaters
DuraWave™ Infrared Heaters use technology that was specifically developed by SaunaMed saunas. Instead of using harmful chemicals and toxins to work, DuraWave uses 100% pure ceramic elements that are each filled with lava sand. This unique approach allows the DuraWave Infrared Heater to give the best heat distribution to maximize your relaxation and health benefits. It also allows the DuraWave heater to be safe to the touch, so you can easily lean against it.
Every human on earth sends and receives Far Infrared waves. The range of waves generated by the human body is 6 to 20 microns; with the optimum micron output ranging between 7.5 and 15 microns. This optimum range is very similar to the resonant frequency of water molecules.
DuraWave™ Infrared Heaters have been designed and calibrated to target this optimal range of wave length that is best suited to the health and relaxation of the human body. The most prevalent wavelength emitted by saunas with DuraWave technology is 9.4 microns, which is the frequency at which water molecules resonate (vibrate). It is this vibration that leads to the release of toxic gases and cellular toxins.
The optimal micron output provided by DuraWave technology also allows for the much deeper penetration of the Far Infrared heat that improves pain relief, detoxification, circulation, and increased peripheral blood flow.
DuraWave™ Infrared Heaters have even been through clinical tests to prove that the Far Infrared rays that they produce are at the level that can in fact increase the health and wellbeing of the user. Many other products out there try to claim the same, but do not have the clinical tests to back their claims up.
We can make these claims because there is a history of medical research and positive results all verifying the benefits of using Far Infrared saunas that use pure ceramic, concaved shaped emitters like SaunaMed does.
They have been used for decades to maximize health benefits and are recommended by doctors and actual users around the world that have experienced what they can do to help a person relax and achieve better health. The books and research that have been completed on this topic have been based on the use of exactly such Far Infrared saunas.
DuraWave™ heaters were created so that there was an alternative to the carbon heaters that required potentially harmful chemicals to be used when they were made.
Carbon heating elements start as two pieces of flexible fiberglass (plastic resins and glass cloth). A thin conductive layer of carbon is printed onto the fiberglass; then the fiberglass is pressurized and laminated to complete the assembly. Through this process, compounds of styrene, lead, iron, aluminum, zinc, boron and barium are introduced into the sauna.
For a product that is supposed to enhance health and relaxation, having these types of chemicals present was unacceptable. You can’t detoxify in a unit that is adding its own toxins while you are using it.
In addition to not using toxins, DuraWave™ heaters are easier to ship and replace if a problem arises, they heat up faster, are more durable and have high levels of heat output.
SaunaMed did consider developing carbon elements, however, after extensive research; we chose to stick with our very popular DuraWave™ heaters, due to the following findings;
Carbon heaters are flat and cannot deliver the Far Infrared rays to every part of the body. Because Durawave™ heaters are concave, they can.
Infrared efficiency dropped dramatically when sitting more than 8 inches away from the heater.; meaning the air was being warmed better than the body.
To get a good sweat going, the cabin temperature had to be much higher with a carbon heater. This was due to them having to be thermostat controlled.
Carbon heaters required that the interior of the cabin be lined with unattractive elements in order to create the temperature and infrared flow needed for the heater to be effective.
Toxic chemicals are used in the production of carbon heating elements. Compounds of styrene, lead, iron, aluminium, zinc, boron and barium are introduced into the sauna. We found it absolutely unacceptable to introduce lead, and especially styrene in a therapeutic environment designed for detoxification.
Carbon panels, in general, give off very high levels of EMR (Electromagnetic Radiation) and there is no way to shield this.
Instead of your body absorbing the infrared heat from the carbon heater, it was absorbed by the dust and bacteria that collected in the wood brackets holding the carbon heater in place.
It was difficult to clean the sweat stains off of the carbon heaters.
EMR testing measures the strength of electromagnetic fields. Electromagnetic fields are generated by any appliance running off AC power therefore any appliance plugged into a main power socket will generate a field to some degree. There are various units of measurement used for electromagnetic fields with ones of the most commonly used being Milli-Gauss (mG). The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection have set guidelines for residential and occupational exposure to power frequency magnetic fields, this is currently set at 1,000mG equivalent to 100 microtesla (µT). International guidelines and national safety standards for electromagnetic fields are developed on the basis of the current scientific knowledge to ensure that the fields humans encounter are not harmful to health. To compensate for uncertainties in knowledge (due, for example, to experimental errors, extrapolation from animals to humans, or statistical uncertainty), large safety factors are incorporated into the set exposure limits. Based on a recent in-depth review of the scientific literature, the World Health Organisation concluded that current evidence does not confirm the existence of any health consequences from exposure to low level electromagnetic fields, such as those found in a SaunaMed Infrared Sauna. You can read more about this by using the following link http://www.who.int/peh-emf/about/WhatisEMF/en/index1.html
EMR Neutral™ infrared heaters by SaunaMed give off ultra-low EMR, our patent pending technology ensures that you are never exposed to high levels of EMR in the sauna. Our testing only picked up any sign of EMR when the sensor was nearly touching the actual heater. From a range of 10cm from the built in back rest there was no detectable EMR. If SaunaMed was unsafe, it wouldn’t be one of the most widely accepted sauna brands used by doctors and other health care professionals.
What level of EMR is safe to be exposed to?
The 3mG cut-off point has been adopted as the standard by many experts, government departments (the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)) and countries (Sweden).
We found that standard infrared emitters can emit high levels of EMR and carbon heaters give off much higher levels of EMR.
We use a state-of-the-art TriField Meter to test all of our heaters to ensure that they are EMR Neutral™ and do not exceed these recommended safe levels.
All of our models have EMR Neutral heaters.
What is an Oxygen Ioniser
It is a device that cleans the air of pollens, dust, bacteria and other pollutants. The Oxygen Ionizer in our Infrared saunas, remove dander, odors and other allergens; leaving you with fresh, clean air inside your sauna.
How does an Oxygen Ionizer work?
They create an electrical charge that produces negative ions. These negative ions are then attracted to the positive ions of dust, mold, bacteria, pollen and others. Once the positive and negative ions bond, they then fall to the ground because of the weight. (Don’t forget to clean the floor of your sauna regularly to remove these fallen ions.)
The small negative ions are similar to the ones found in natural environments that have an invigorating feel to them; like waterfalls, the seashore and alpine regions.
With our easy to follow instructions, it should take you about 30 minutes to put your new sauna together.
Your sauna will arrive to you in 2 or 3 large boxes that are packed flat, so that they are easy to move around your home or to transport if you move. We also include tools with your sauna, at no extra charge, to make it even easier for you to put together the precisely fitting sections.
All the wiring and accessories for your sauna are already in place, all you have to do is plug it in.
Do I need to make arrangements to have ventilation or plumbing put in for the sauna?
The sauna does not require any plumbing and it is already designed to be self-ventilating. There is a sliding vent that controls the release of heated air and the sauna itself is raised off of the floor with its own supports, so that it does not need any additional venting and protects your floor at the same time.
As long as you can get the panels through the door to where you want the sauna to be assembled, you should be able to put it anywhere. Because of the advanced Far Infrared technology, a SaunaMed sauna can be installed in any room.
Unlike the older steam saunas that required their own special wiring, special flooring and a ventilation system; you can put our saunas anywhere you have an 110V plug in available. This means that you can turn unused space in your garage, spare bedroom or any other area into a place you can relax and enhance your health.
Yes, and no. It can be installed outside, as long as it is in a building like a shed or garage.
Are your saunas noisy?
No, we want you to be able to relax in our saunas and have designed them to run silently.
How often can I use the Infrared Sauna?
Surprisingly, it is best if you slowly build up tolerance to the sauna; just like you would with any other form of exercise. Start out by using a lower temperature of about 95 °F for 15-20 minutes for 3 times a week. Once you have adapted to your sauna, you can increase your temperature and time to what works best for you.
Many people use their saunas everyday for about 35 to 40 minutes once they are used to using it.
Most benefits are obtained when using a lower temperature. We suggest you start at 95°F and work up from there.
Is drinking water before and after I use my sauna recommended?
Drinking water before, during and after using your sauna is highly recommended. We have even provided drink holders inside your sauna to make it easy for you to be able to do this.
You need to consult your doctor if you have a specific health condition or if you are pregnant before you use a sauna.
Otherwise, the more controlled temperature and safe heating devices make our Far Infrared saunas beneficial to a large part of the population.
Absolutely! Many practitioners that specialize in the anti-aging process are now using Far Infrared Sauna Therapy in their programs. The older we get the more toxic our bodies get and a Far Infrared sauna can help release some of the toxins we have built up. For elderly users though, it is important to stay hydrated while using a sauna and also start your sauna therapy by using a lower temperature.
In general, because of the safe heating apparatus in our saunas, anyone can safely use them. For children under ten, they should only use it for short periods of time and drink plenty of water. If you have a child with ADD/ADHD, sauna therapy has been noted to help.
The only regular maintenance you will need to perform on your sauna is to wipe down the glass door and change the light bulb. To clean, you can simply mop the floor with warm water and disinfectant. The benches should be wiped down with warm soapy water, but sparingly, so that the water doesn’t soak into the wood.
If anything more complicated than that is required, we have technicians available for you to talk with and your sauna comes with a troubleshooting guide.
There are many types of wood to choose from when selecting your sauna. Here at Aqualine we have two preferred woods that we work with for infrared saunas: Canadian Hemlock and Canadian Red Cedar.
The Canadian Hemlock we use is of the highest quality; it provides a softer feel and has a decrease chance of splinting due to the fine grain and lack of knots. We like using this particular wood because it also doesn’t give off the toxins that Sitka and pine do.
Hemlock is the same type of wood that is used to make bridge timbers, flooring, trim, paneling and also house sills. It is used frequently because it is an attractive wood that is also naturally strong and durable. Compared to other woods that have a durability life of around 200 years, hemlock can last anywhere from 300-1000 years.
It is also an ideal wood for saunas due to it being naturally decay resistant.
As most already know, Canadian Red Cedar has a pleasant smell to it. What people don’t know is that this smell has been used for thousands of years as therapy. When cedar is burned, it encourages strength and creates harmony; when its essential oils are used, it calms and soothes those that are stressed. Other cultures have even used cedar to treat ailments ranging from respiratory problems to menstrual pain.
Ceramic infrared heaters heat up faster, give off a high level of heat and are known to be durable. Between the two, ceramic heaters are the most commonly chosen.
What is the warranty on your saunas?
We offer a 10-year warranty on our wood and glass parts and a 2-year warranty on electric parts. If anything happens during this time we will send you out replacement instructions and parts at no cost to you.
There are many additional reasons to use our saunas in your hotel. First, they cost less to run and maintain than other units.
Second, the Canadian Hemlock that is used in our saunas is non-allergenic and non-toxic, decreasing the chance of an allergic reaction in the 15% of your hotel guests that are allergic to Sitka, pine and other types of woods.
Third, the controllable temperature will be healthier and safer for your hotel guests.

Infrared rays directly warm our body instead of the air; only 20% of its energy is used in heating the air. This is the major difference between a SaunaMed Infrared Sauna and a steam sauna. This direct heat and deep penetration of almost 2 inches into the skin is what causes the increased sweating as compared to other saunas. The Infrared rays also stimulate the deeper muscles and tissues to release stored fat and toxins to give you’re the feeling of being cleansed, energized and refreshed.
Does my sauna have to be pre-heated?
No, a SaunaMed will heat up in just a few minutes as compared to other traditional saunas that can take 30-40 minutes to heat up.
FAR Infrared Sauna Health Benefits
"The Far Infrared sauna is the safest, most efficient and economical way of eliminating stored toxins, making it a household necessity. I am convinced that the Far Infrared sauna is something that everyone should incorporate into their lifestyle to restore health. The Far Infrared sauna is far safer and more tolerable than a conventional sauna because it uses a heat energy that penetrates into tissues, triggering mobilization of chemicals from fat storage, directly into the sweat." (Sherry A. Rogers, M.D. Centre for Environmental Medicine)
It has become well known that people who take regular saunas (2-3 per week) reduce their incidence of colds and influenza by over 65% (a study by the British Medical Association).
The main reason people use saunas is for relaxation and to reduce stress. There are other additional health benefits with using a sauna as well; primarily, the removal of toxins in your body from the sweating process. Heat therapy has also been used for hundreds of years as a source to naturally heal many illnesses and discomforts. With the return of natural therapies, Far Infrared saunas are growing in popularity because of this.

In a single sauna session you could burn up to 600 calories (the equivalent of exercising for 30 minutes). This caloric burn is directly associated to weight loss, but it is the detoxification process that will have the greatest affect. When toxins are in the body they are stored in the fat cell to protect your organs from being exposed to them. Until you are able to get your body to release these toxins, you will not be able to lose the fat that is storing it. Burning calories through heat and detoxifying your body are why Infrared saunas are a relaxing and potent way to bring your body back to a healthy state and lose weight at the same time.
Scientific studies have shown that a thirty-minute session in an infrared sauna can result in the loss of toxins and stored fats in the body by up to six times the level a traditional sauna or exercise alone can achieve.
Just sitting for 30 minutes in an infrared sauna will cause your body to use up to 600 calories and sweat three times more than you would in a traditional sauna. This sweat is bringing all of impurities from inside to the outside and getting rid of them. These impurities are being broken down by the deep, penetrating infrared heat that is melting cellulite, fats, toxins and acids.
Accumulated toxins and stored fat are released by the radiant heat that stimulates the deep tissue and organs. Once stimulated, the Aqualine Infrared Sauna encourages the release of toxins through the skin. The skin is important in this toxin elimination as it can get rid of up to 30% of the body’s waste.
Muscles worked during exercise produce heat, causing the heart to pump blood faster to the areas that need it and the body needs to compensate for this increased heat. The best defense the body has to overheating is sweating, because as sweat evaporates from the skin it takes the heat with it.
A moderately conditioned person can easily sweat off up to 1000gms or more in a single sauna session, the equivalent in sweat to a run of 6-10 miles.
By just sitting in a SaunaMed sauna your body will start to sweat, raise its heart rate, dilate its capillaries and other parts of the cardiovascular system; all resulting in the same cardiovascular benefits of physical exercise.
NASA has also concluded after lengthy trails in the 1980's that infrared therapy is the best way for astronauts to maintain cardiovascular fitness on long, cramped space flights.
As you sweat, your heart has to work harder to pump blood through your body. Just being in an Aqualine Infrared sauna for 30 minutes is the same as walking to jogging for 6-10 miles. The sauna also increases your blood circulation and your heart rate, which are both essential in maintaining heart health. As the blood is diverted from the inner organs to the extremities, your heart rate is increase, but without the increase in blood pressure.
This makes a session in an Aqualine Infrared sauna beneficial for everyone’s heart, especially for those that are not able to physically exert themselves.
Health professionals and Sports Medicine professionals have used infrared heat lamps for years to treat joint and muscle problems. This is the same type of therapy you will be experiencing when you sit in an Infrared sauna.
Infrared therapy dilates the capillaries in the areas associated with pain, allowing the oxygen-rich blood to come into the area and remove the metabolic wastes that has built up and is contributing to the pain. The increased blood circulation also heals muscles and soft tissue injuries, by removing the metabolic waste and bringing oxygen-rich blood to oxygen-depleted muscles; therefore increasing their healing time.
Yes, it can and it is often used by beauty specialists in Europe to do so. The radiant Infrared heat breaks down the stubborn cellulite better than traditional saunas, because it can penetrate the skin three times as deep.
You will see a noticeable improvement in your skin texture, tone, elasticity and tone after using an Infrared sauna. The Infrared heat increases circulation in the skin as well as encouraging the body to sweat. The sweat removes toxins, dead skin cells and other deep impurities, while the circulation brings the natural nutrients for your skin back to the surface.
Infrared heat is also known to be beneficial to heal:
Eczema
Rashes
Psoriasis
Burn
Cuts
Acne
Lesions
Our autonomic nervous system is put under constant strain due to stress, which can lead to the many chronic diseases that we suffer from today.
The heat from the sauna relaxes that muscles and relieves their aches and pains. By relaxing, the muscles are allowing the capillary muscles to expand and circulate like they are supposed to, leading to the reduction of stress levels in the body. The Infrared rays in the sauna also clear away the built up carbon dioxide and lactic acid around the muscles.
Psychologically, the calming and relaxing environment in the sauna stimulates the endorphins in the brain making you feel good and reducing your stress.
When toxins are present in our body, blood circulation is blocked, cellular energy is impaired and the body’s immune system is inhibited; which makes it too hard for the body to fight disease.
When you do become sick, your body increases its temperature to fight off whatever bacteria, microbe or virus you have. It is better known as “having a fever”. Which is exactly what the deep, radiant infrared heat does to your body as well, when you sit in a SaunaMed sauna.
The increased temperature helps to boost your immune system by increasing production of white blood cells (leukocytes) by your bone marrow and killer T-cells by your thymus. Combined with the elimination of toxins and wastes from your body, your overall health and resistance to disease is noticeably improved so you feel and look better.
Use of our sauna before exercise increases blood circulation and acts as a warm up before activity. After you are done exercising, Infrared Sauna Therapy can significantly reduce Lactic acid; a by-product of muscle metabolism that causes soreness and stiffness after exercise.
My doctor says that a Far Infrared sauna is very effective for detoxifying mercury without adding to my total toxicity. Is this true?
Your doctor is correct and it has also been proven in medical tests.
Traditional Steam Saunas Frequently Asked Questions
Our traditional saunas are perfect for use as domestic saunas, even though they are technically classed as commercial saunas. We believe that our units have the most flexibility in the sauna industry, as well as being the best quality units.
We are also one of the first sauna companies to lay out our full pricing online for our high-end and commercial units. Many other companies in this sector will first gauge how much your budget is and how much you are worth; before they provide you with a price. We use fair pricing and do not give special rates to different customers, so that everybody gets a fair deal.
Our traditional saunas come with an Aqualine’s high quality sauna (of course), all parts and accessories, the sauna stones and even a gift pack that is included free with every sauna.
Our Finnish indoor saunas, however, do not come complete with a floor. Most of our customers choose to use a tiled floor with this particular model.
All the saunas are designed for easy assembly. All that is required is a local, qualified electrician to connect up the heater to your electrical supply using an adjacent isolator. Also, if you need help with the main cabin assembly, a local carpenter can do this.
Most of the smaller saunas will not require an upgrade; you will only need to upgrade your electrical supply if your heater is rated above 120V. You can find the heater rating on the individual product pages.
A local electrician can easily install your new traditional sauna for you if it is a higher voltage heater.
A typical session in a traditional sauna lasts about 10-15 minutes. Many sauna users will often have several sessions in a row, with short breaks in between to drink some water and cool down a bit.
The most typical temperature range in a traditional sauna is 180°F - 190°F. Personal preference and comfort level is the most important thing to consider when using your traditional sauna.
Almost all traditional saunas will require a direct 120V hook-up to the household electrical system. Some smaller sizes that only require a 2 kilowatt heater are available in a 120V electrical configuration.
In almost all circumstances a floor drain is neither required nor necessary for personal use saunas. In some cases of commercial use, a floor drain may be a requirement as part of the building code.
Normally, any excess water or moisture can be easily taken care of by allowing the heater to run for a length of time until the heat has evaporated the moisture.
All of our traditional saunas come with ventilation built into the walls, and will have plenty of fresh air circulated in from the outside environment; even if the sauna is installed indoors.
Can any stone materials serve as heater stones?
All of our sauna packages include sauna stones with the heaters, but if you want to purchase additional heater stones, they must have a very, specific quality for them to work as heater stones.
They should be of a material that is as heavy as possible, dark in color, and large in size for them to be able to store as much heat energy as possible. Stone material that is well-known and suitable for use in heaters include: peridotite, olivine and olivine-dolerite.
When installing them, heater stones must be arranged loosely to ensure there is good air circulation.
Heater dealers sell stones that are purposely intended for use as heater stones and come from well-known suppliers; whose composition and suitability are guaranteed.
It really all depends on how often the sauna is used. If it is an average of twice a week, the stones should be changed at least once a year.
It is a good idea to rearrange the stones occasionally, as they tend to crumble with use and obstructs the free circulation of air. Good air circulation will ensure that the heater works properly and that the resistors will also last.
